We are so thrilled to introduce our first “couple” athlete spotlight! These two have the best workout buddies and accountability partners in each other. It’s so fun to watch them encourage each other as well as others in the gym and work hard every day toward their goals. They both did our last in-house athlete transformation challenge and plan to do the next one, so we can’t wait to see where this leads them in the new year! Congrats guys on your hard work! If you know Michael and Liz together, you know this photograph is the exact image of them, always happy and always loving life!
Tell me about your fitness journey:Growing up I was a year-round athlete, I was a state swimmer, played water polo, tennis and was an All-Conference lacrosse player after playing for 12 years. Once I went to college I lost a lot of momentum since I didn’t play a sport, I missed it so much that I ended up dropping the sorority I was in and joined the club water polo team for my junior and senior years of college.Since CSU, I have dabbled in Masters swimming, running, and other weightlifting programs! When I moved to California in 2013, I joined my first Crossfit gym and met my now husband! I am very excited to be back at a Crossfit gym and one that I love!Since starting with KADA, what changes have you seen:I have set new personal records in almost all of my lifts. My endurance is much higher and I lost 10 pounds in the challenge! Things that were really hard initially have become much easier like box jumps, push-ups, and double-unders. I also just got my kipping pull-ups back! What workouts/movements are your favorite and what are your least favorite:Favorite workouts are front or back squats and push-ups. Least favorite is overhead squats. What are your current goals:Get over 200lbs in the deadlift, string together kipping pull-ups, string together double-unders, get a strict pull-up, and continue to lose weight. What keeps you motivated:My husband and a Hawaii trip we have in February! What is your stress reliever and how do you like to relax:Workouts always help relieve my stress but so does red wine! I love painting, that is my happy place! What is your favorite go-to healthy meal:Ground turkey and baked bell peppers and onions.
Started doing Crossfit in 2013 when I was getting ready to do a Tough Mudder for the very first time. Ever since college, I had tried working out at the globo-gyms, and running, etc. but nothing ever stuck. I am naturally a very competitive person and Crossfit fit right in that, being able to compete against others to help push myself…it also helped that I started to see results! I took a Crossfit hiatus for about 2 years after moving to Colorado and let myself fall back into old bad habits, and the excuse train was in full force. I decided the excuses had to stop and I wanted to go back to doing what I loved. After trying out about 4 Crossfit gyms in Colorado I fell in love with KADA (how could you not), and haven’t looked back since.
Since starting with KADA, what changes have you seen:
When I started KADA back in April, I had let my body get out of shape, but even worse was my mental state was not great. I had gotten a new role at work that had added a lot of stress to my work & personal life. I decided to commit to myself that I wanted to get back in shape. Since then I have lost 30 pounds, and feel like a new person physically & mentally. KADA has offered me a great support system inside and outside of the gym. I truly look forward to coming in each day to see everyone and keep striving towards a healthier lifestyle.
What workouts/movements are your favorite and what are your least favorite:
Favorite lift is Snatch! Love Olympic lifting. Least favorite is for sure thrusters…I mean who likes thrusters!!
What are your current goals:
My current goals were to hit PR’s in the major lifts that I had set back in 2015. I also want to start doing Crossfit competitions again in early 2019!
What keeps you motivated:
I think the biggest thing that keeps me motivated is just how I feel now. I am so much happier when I’m working out and active, and that feeling is hard to replicate. My wife Liz is also a huge motivator as we are very competitive and definitely push each other each day to eat healthy and work out hard.
What is your stress reliever and how do you like to relax:
Outside of the gym my stress reliever is snowboarding in the winter, and golf in the summer. But nothing beats throwing some heavy weights around when you’re stressed out.
What is your favorite go-to healthy meal:
Grilled Chicken/Steak Fajitas (no tortillas of course)! We meal prep at the start of each week and making fajitas is an easy & delicious way to eat healthy…and they last throughout the week. Perfect Food bars are also a life savor and super delicious.
